Five Games You Can Play With a Toddler at the Park

It is no surprise why children love taking their "mini vacation" to go to the park and play. It is an adventure to them, they get to be outside and of course there are generally swings and other fun things to explore. Then it happens; boredom strikes and grumpiness sets in. Just because they are tired of swinging and starting to whine does not mean you need to pack up everything and go back home. There are plenty of fun activities that you can do together during your visit here.

1. Scavenger Hunt - You can make this list before you leave for the park so when the children are tired of playing this list is ready. Your scavenger hunt list can be items that you can physically pick up and things that you just want to look for to see and check off the list. Leaves, a smooth rock and a nut from a tree can all be pick up type of items and then you can look for a squirrel, butterfly, robin, duck (depending on if your park has water), etc. If you have two adults going to the park then this could be quite a long list of small items you could carry in a bag from home and one adult could hide the items around the park while the other one watches the children. Then you get to explore the park looking for things together.

2. Soccer - Bringing along a ball, specifically a ball designed for toddlers is a great way to not only kill some time but wear them down! 3. Kite flying - Even with the smallest amount of wind you can easily fly a kite an this is such a fun activity for toddlers. 4. Simon Says - Of course you can play Simon Says at home but you don't have nearly enough room to "take 10 steps back" or "hop 6 jumps forward". This is a favorite game by toddlers and the more steps and jumping they take, the better they will nap later.

5. Frisbee - Toddlers love playing with a Frisbee and if you're at the park then you don't have to worry about the Frisbee constantly going over the fence to the neighbor's yard or hitting the tree in your small backyard. You can even set goal posts like soccer and try to get the Frisbee through the posts.

It is much more exciting for a toddler if you are playing games with them instead of watching them. It is a great time to bond and make memories and it also teaches them to be creative. If children learn that they can utilize things like rocks for a goal post, etc it enhances their creativity so they don't always feel they have to rely on "things" to entertain them. Next time you go to the park, take along a ball or a kite. They are easy to stuff in your bag that you're already carry snacks and a first aid kit in and play a few games with your toddler.

5 Things to Do With a Toddler When the Weather is Bad

There are usually lots of things to do with a toddler when the weather outside is nice - go for a walk, go to the park, play in the yard and so on.

But what about those days when it is pouring rain, or in the middle of a winter cold-spell, or during a summer heat wave? What then?

Here are 5 great ideas for things to do with a toddler when you just can't be outside.

Number 1 - Visit the public library - and not to read books. Take your toddler to the library. Many libraries in cities across North America have 'kids' play and explore areas. For example, in our city - most of the Hamilton Public Library locations have an area where your toddler can play until they get tuckered out. They have a miniature train set up for playing, a puppet stage for those aspiring actors, puzzles galore. Its FREE and a great way to spend an active hour with your child.

Number 2 - Visit a child museum. I was amazed how many fun and interesting things there are to see and do at a children's museum. And you may be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is one in your city or a nearby city. Just go on-line and in your favourite search engine like Google or Yahoo type in children museum.

The children museum in our city has big blocks to play with, musical instruments to experiment with, a paint room with aprons (it still will be messy - but so what it's fun), rocks with fossils to feel and see, fish tanks, colouring stations, and a whole bunch more. It may not be free in your city but it will not cost very much. Check it out for great fun with your child.

Number 3 - Visit a business supply store like Staples or a big box store like Costco or Sam's Club. I know you must be thinking how much fun can that be. Most of our kids like to ride in a shopping cart. So when it's not so nice outside I head off to one of these stores and put my guy in the cart and we can spend up to an hour walking the aisles. We stop to pick up something colourful - like a pad of coloured sticky notes. We feel them, we smell them and then we put them back. A bit unusual but still loads of fun!

Number 4 - Go grocery shopping. The trick here is that this is not the time to buy a long list of groceries - just buy a few things. This is an outing for focusing on your baby and experiencing all the things in the store. Pop your toddler in the shopping cart and look at the GREEN peppers, the RED peppers, hold a box of Kleenex, shake a box of macaroni, feel the roughness of a kiwi, and so on.

Number 5 - Visit a restaurant for a snack. One of my favourite things to do is to visit a coffee shop or even a McDonald's for a snack. This outing will work at any restaurant that has a high chair and sells somewhat healthy food - such as a muffin. We do this once a week - go to one of the other outings mentioned above and then head to a Williams Coffee Shop of a McDonald's. I order a muffin for sharing, a glass of ice water for sipping and a coffee for me. I put my guy in a high chair, and we enjoy sharing the muffin and let him practice sipping water out of a glass - no sippy cups here - slurping the water down his shirt is part of the fun.

There is usually lots of people to look at, music playing in the background and great company sharing a snack with each other. It can't be any better than this - food, fun and great company.

These are 5 ideas that work for us. Use this as a starting point and create your own adventures with your child - even when it's not so nice outside.

Graco Quattro Tour Stroller - A Review For Parents

The Quattro Tour stroller from Graco comes in two different models: The Quattro Tour Deluxe and the Quattro Tour Sport. The difference between the two models is minimal. The Deluxe model is built with luxury in mind whereas the Sport model is a bit more rugged which makes it ideal for off-pavement strolling. Graco Describes this stroller as being the SUV of strollers. Both the Deluxe and the Sport models offer a wide variety of material patterns and colors.

The Quattro Tour stroller is recommended for infants and children up to four years old - who weigh less than fifty pounds.

As part of the review process, in addition to taking a close look at the stroller and how it performs, I communicated with several parents - to get a first hand account of the stroller's pros and cons.

In summary, this stroller is well-built, it's very comfortable for both parent and child, and with the exception of a one issue, it is close to being perfect. With its all aluminum lightweight frame, its versatile wheels and its safety features, the Quattro Tour should definitely be considered when you shop for your new stroller.

Maneuverability

The Quattro Tour has six large rubber wheels - four in the front and two in the back. The double front wheels swivel which gives the Quattro Tour a fantastic turning radius. Each set of wheels has a snap down lock which makes it easy to maneuver the stroller when you're going over uneven terrain.

Comfort

The child's seat is well-padded, it has removable head support for infants, and the seat is comfortably positioned in such a way that the child sits up fairly high in the seat - which makes it easy for your little one to see. The seat has three reclining positions, including a fully-reclined position, and it has a 5-point harness (I'll talk about the harness in the following Safety section.)

The Quattro Tour's padded handle bars are ergonomically designed for maximum comfort. They are made of a lightweight aluminum which is comfortable for most moms and dads. I say 'most' opposed to 'all' because the handle bar is positioned kind of high and, unfortunately, the handle bar height is not adjustable. This is one of the few complaints I heard about this stroller.

The Quattro Tour stroller rides quite smoothly due to its big rubber wheels. When you combine the big rubber wheels with the swivel / lock capabilities, you get a stroller that maneuvers wonderfully.

Function

This stroller is not light but at 26lbs., you won't have too much trouble transporting it. And with its one hand fold set up, you can easily open and close the stroller. When you collapse the stroller, it automatically locks into its folded position. In this position it actually lies pretty flat - the Graco Quattro Tour stroller is not a lightweight umbrella-like stroller, but it does fit pretty well in your car's trunk.

The Quattro Tour has a full sized, tinted, canopy which rotates 180 degrees to keep your child out of the direct sunlight. You can check on your baby without disturbing him or her because its canopy has a tinted plastic window. The window also has a zippered flap which offers maximum protection from the elements.

Graco car seats can attach to the Quattro Tour Stroller - for your infant. When the car seat is installed the canopy on both the car seat and the stroller can be used at the same time to fully protect your little one from the elements. The Quattro Tour is compatible with SnugRide 32 Infant Car Seats, with SnugRide Infant Car Seats and with Infant SafeSeat Car Seats.

When the car seat is attached to the stroller, your baby will face the rear of the stroller, which makes it really easy for you to peek in to make sure that he or she is doing alright.

The stroller handle bar features ComfortTracker, a digital read-out for the time and air temperature. The handlebar also has a plastic compartment that is perfect for holding a cell phone, car keys, etc. The handle bar also has a two-cup drink holder for the parents.

Your child gets a nifty tray too. The Graco Quattro Tour features a snack & drink tray which doubles as a mini play area for long walks. This tray, swings out of the way for child loading & unloading, it has three compartments for snacks, a cup and play-things.

The stroller has a large storage basket that is located underneath the stroller seat. The basket provides lots of space for a large diaper bag. Graco has made it easy for mom's and dad's to access the storage basket - you can store and retrieve your gear without disturbing your baby - even when the seat is fully reclined.

Safety

The Quattro Tour has an adjustable harness with a five-point configuration that can be converted into a three-point harness when your child is a little older.

The five-point harness configuration is ideal for smaller babies or for young toddlers that need to be held securely in the stroller for safety.

The one touch brake system is a nice feature to have in a stroller. With one click you can safely lock your stroller into a stationary position.

Recommendation

I would definitely recommend the Graco Quattro Tour Stroller. The Quattro Tour gets 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. If Graco built the Quattro Tour with height adjustable handle bars... I would have given them a 'perfect' rating.

mind: durability, adaptability and fun. Kids' interests change quickly and
they grow just about as fast, so it's important to shop smart. Most kids
only need a bed, dresser and a desk with a chair.

Baby Sleep Problems? What To Do When Your Baby Just Can't Sleep Through The Night

Most babies do not sleep through the night for many reasons. Sometimes it could be due to an illness or discomfort as in colic.

But some of the sleep problems could be caused by you! You don't do this on purpose, you just did not know. You probably got advice from family and friends on how to solve the nighttime baby sleep problem.

What not to do:

(1) If your baby is under 2 months old, do not spend more than a half hour trying to sooth the baby to sleep.

(2) Please do not leave a bright light on in the baby's room at night. Just leave enough light in the room so you can change and feed your baby. Your baby needs to learn that if the room is dark it is still sleep time.

(3) As mentioned in some of my articles, do not let your baby have a bottle at night in the crib. It is best to use a pacifier.

(1) While you are feeding your baby and baby starts to look sleepy, gently put baby into the crib. If you rock or hold your baby to help sleep, this could cause a dependency issue. Just stay near until your baby falls asleep.

I am a little nervous about getting started on this subject for fear of writing an entire book on it. I do not deny the facts that there is such a thing as mid life crises and am probably going through one right now, as I type away on my laptop. This malady does not affect just men but strikes the female gender as well. As I stated before, this is a legitimate occurrence - yet it is also used as an excuse for the desire to act stupid, immoral, selfish, and ridiculous.

I have heard of this all since childhood from the women in my family. There always was a discussion concerning who was having midlife Crises and who was getting a divorce because of it, when the women congregated.

Young Women have listened repeatedly to the symptoms to watch for in their man. They would listen and cringe at the thought of their midlife years and the metamorphosis of their beloved husband. It is always good to care how you look. Maybe that might start when you slow down enough to realize your body is aging but it is never to late start taking care of yourself. If you desire a face-lift or a tummy tuck for the right reasons than I am behind you 100%. You have to be able to afford it without penalizing your family and as long as have that covered - go for it. I do not care if you are male or female, as long as you like yourself inside and want to dress up your outside- I think it is great.

Okay you have reached midlife and done your mini van time, dealt with the stale French fries in the car and been sensible in limiting car payments. Through out the years, you have purchased cars with the family in mind. If you reached midlife and have the ability to afford a sports car or a sporty pick up truck - honey, you go for it. Heavens no, no one has more to offer than my own mate does! I have the desire, to lose weight, tighten up, lose wrinkles, and strut my stuff. I want to do this for myself first and Steve secondly. I think he is a wonderful man and is the hottest number around. How would going out and cheating make me feel any younger or better about myself? What would be great though is to feel good about myself from the inside out and sharing it with the person I love.

For far too long many people have used the tag "Midlife Crises" to go out and act in a way they know is immoral and unacceptable. Yet for some reason, they feel if they use the guise "Midlife Crises", everyone will understand and forgive whatever despicable behavior they want to display. This is not a reason to have an affair, become an insensitive jerk, or walk away from relationship.

In the past, many males hit this age and experienced sexual dysfunction and the frustration that went with it. This is normal considering the age and the fluctuation in testosterone and hormones. However, science has found a help aid and it is not another mate 20 years your junior. It is called Viagra. The same for the waning lack of interest in the female sexual appetite as well. Science has a pill for that restores you back to your hot little self. A trip to the doctor could have you and your significant other enjoying a hot second honeymoon.

A lack of understanding about how to use your actions, and your attention, to shape healthy behavior is where the problem really lies. In the arena of parenting, this is a critical lesson to learn. Why don't words work to teach limits?

There are several reasons why. Here they are.

1. Words bring parent attention to the problem.

When a problem exists, like a temper tantrum or we see an upset in the making, we step in with lots of words, and children get lots of attention. If we are trying to teach a child to abandon a tantrum as a way of getting satisfaction, how can we do that by throwing our words and attention to it? If we simply step in with words and lectures, the unwanted behavior just gets more and more parental attention.

2. Words do not control behavior like we think they do.

If you words really controlled your child's actions, you would not likely be reading this. In fact, as a Licensed Psychologist, I would be out of business if words effectively controlled children's behavior. It simply doesn't work that way.

3. Words make us think we are doing something...when we aren't!

When we start talking, we think we are working toward a solution. This is a lie. Just watch the tantrums, and you see them getting worse. Yet, we often keep talking. Why? Because we falsely believe we are doing something.
We must abandon this completely, if we want those temper tantrums to go away.

So what does work?

While I can't give the whole answer here, I can be very clear with you. Stop talking to the tantrum. Stop negotiating with the tantrum. Stop dancing around the temper tantrums. Abandon efforts to use words to help your child out of their temper tantrums...they must find their own path. If you just start here, you will find that life at home will very likely get worse for a few days and then turn dramatically better. Your child will seek out more of those words from you. You must stay away, and stick to this first stage strategy, and things will get better!

I have already tested this, and you know that I speak accurately.
